Gas exposure assessment quantifies the inhalation dose UK workers actually receive from toxic, asphyxiant or flammable gases and compares it against the UK toxic gas legal limits and workplace atmospheric standards. It is the technical core of workplace gas exposure compliance for any workplace where gas exposure is reasonably foreseeable.
What a gas exposure assessment is
A gas exposure assessment is a structured measurement and evaluation exercise that converts general gas hazard awareness into a defensible exposure figure for each Similar Exposure Group. Under workplace gas exposure the employer must assess whether exposure is being prevented or, if prevention is not reasonably practicable, adequately controlled — and that judgement must be made on evidence, not assumption.
The deliverable is a written exposure assessment that records the gases, sources, work activities, sampling strategy, measured concentrations, comparison with the relevant toxic gas legal limits and a conclusion on control adequacy. It is the document an UK regulator, insurer or principal contractor will ask for.
The workplace atmospheric standards toxic gas legal limit framework
workplace atmospheric standards/2005 is the document that lists the current legally enforceable toxic gas legal limits in Great Britain. For each substance with a toxic gas legal limit, workplace atmospheric standards sets a long-term limit (8-hour Time-Weighted Average) and, for many substances, a short-term limit (15-minute STEL). Some carcinogenic, mutagenic or respiratory sensitiser gases also carry additional notations that affect the control strategy.

Measuring gas exposure in the breathing zone
Personal sampling captures the gas concentration in the worker's breathing zone over a defined sampling period. The sampling head is clipped within 30 cm of the nose and mouth and runs for a known duration with a known flow rate (for pumped samples) or a known uptake rate (for diffusive badges).
Direct-reading personal monitors with internal data logging can also produce a TWA for several common gases such as CO, H₂S, NO₂, SO₂ and CO₂. Where the toxic gas legal limit is at low ppm levels and the gas has cross-sensitivities, pumped sorbent tube sampling analysed at a UKAS-accredited laboratory remains the reference method.

A credible gas exposure assessment follows a documented methodology rather than a one-off measurement. It is matched to the work pattern, the variability of exposure and the toxic gas legal limit margin of the gases involved.

Interpreting exposure against the toxic gas legal limit
An exposure result is rarely a simple pass or fail. Gas exposure assessment and workplace gas exposure duty holders
Under workplace gas exposure the employer is the duty holder and must ensure exposure is prevented or adequately controlled. The exposure assessment is the evidence that supports — or undermines — that duty. It also drives downstream duties: maintenance of control measures (Reg 9), health surveillance (Reg 11) and information, instruction and training (Reg 12).
